Overall Conference Description:

Risk factors for suicide are characteristics of a person or his or her environment that increases the likelihood that he or she will die by suicide. Protective factors are personal or environmental characteristics that help protect people from suicide. This conference aims to increase clinical knowledge of two major risk factors of suicide: thwarted belongingness and trauma/adversity; as well as protective factors against these risks: connection and resiliency.

Thomas Joiner’s Interpersonal Theory of Suicidal Behavior highlights the impact of thwarted belongingness (isolation and lack of connection) on suicide risk and the Suicide Prevention Resource Center highlights the importance of connection as a key protective factor against suicide. Positive and supportive social relationships and community connections, as well as program and practices that promote social connectedness (such as mentorship) can help buffer the effects of risk factors in people’s lives.

The Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Study demonstrates that adverse experiences during childhood can increase risk for suicide and The Suicide Prevention Resource Center cites resiliency, which includes traits such as a positive self-concept and optimism, and the ability to adapt to stress and adversity, as key protective factor against suicide.

This conference aims to increase clinical knowledge of the importance of connection and resiliency as protective factors against suicide through purpose/meaning-making, mentorship, stress-reduction skills and self-care. We will illustrate how connection and resiliency are already being fostered in the Berkshires; explore how to replicate the good work that is already being done in the varied lives/settings of the attendees, while also increasing the knowledge of community resources, specialties and programs in the county for referrals. Resiliency in attendees themselves will also be fostered through the development of self-care skills with focus on yoga-mindfulness and sound-healing.

Conference Objectives:

 1.  The learner will identify risk factors for suicide.

 2.  The learner will identify the importance of connection and resiliency as protective factors in suicide prevention.

 3.  The learner will analyze how connection and resiliency are already being fostered in the Berkshires.

 4.  The learner will learn how to identify and access resources that already exist in the community, and how to reproduce these factors in their own lives/settings.

 5.  The learner will extend the knowledge of resiliency and connection to developing self-care skills for themselves.
