Loss of Our Beloved Coalition Member
This morning, Sept 13th, 2015, June Waldmam our dear & true friend was laid to rest. Here's the prophetic poem June had chosen, to be read at this evening's New Year celebration.
The Summer Day
Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down - who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
My answer, dear June, is to love life as you did, so gently and "value-driven", while tending to heal along the way....
Missing you, with love - Peggy

I've only just read about her passing, and thank you so much, Peggy, and to all the others who are sharing such remembrances. June's legacy, her capacity for helping others, her enthusiasm and zeal for life, and incomparable talent and kindness shall be long lasting in our hearts. As one of her former students, as someone who had sought to interview her as an expert in her field, and as a fellow patron of all things cultural in Berkshire County, I will greatly miss her shining presence and exemplary humaneness.
